Há exatos 40 anos, a banda inglesa de rock Led Zeppelin lançava seu 4º álbum. O disco não tinha um nome mas ficou mundialmente conhecido como Led Zeppelin 4. Outros também o chamam de O Eremita, Quatro Símbolos, Runas e ZoSo, o símbolo usado por Jimmy Page.
O disco foi gravado inicialmente no recém inaugurado no Basing Street Studios, em Londres, ao mesmo tempo em que o Jethro Tull gravava o seu Aqualung. Seguindo uma sugestão do Fleetwood Mac, a banda então se mudou para Headley Grange, uma mansão vitoriana no East Hampshire, para continuar gravações adicionais no Estúdio Móvel dos Rolling Stones.
Quando as bases estavam gravadas, a banda acrescentou detalhes nos estúdios da Island Records. No entanto o resultado ainda não havia ficado nos conformes e o álbum voltou para uma nova mixagem, o que postergou o lançamento por alguns meses.
Outras 3 canções gravadas nessas sessões não apareceram no disco: Down By The Seaside, Night Flight e Boogie With Stu, que foram lançadas 4 anos depois no duplo "Physical Grafitti".
Outros destaques desse álbum são a capa que, segundo Page, representa a dicotomia entre cidade e o interior que estava presente no disco anterior e "O Eremita", desenho creditado a Barrington Colby Mom, influenciado pelo desenho da carta com o mesmo nome no baralho de Tarot desenhado pela artista Rider-Waite.

Esta canção foi composta por Page e Plant em Headley Grange, enquanto o guitarrista experimentava o bandolim de John Paul Jones, segundo o próprio Page explicou em 1977. O vocalista Robert Plant vinha lendo muito sobre o folcore escocês e isso o inspirou a escrever a letra que, como outras da banda, fazem referência ao livro Senhor dos Anéis, de JRR Tolkien. Durante a gravação, Plant sentiu necessidade de uma segunda voz e eles convidaram a cantora folk Sandy Denny, que havia sido a vocalista do grupo Fairport Convention. Plant então fez o papel de narrador, enquanto Danny representou o "Town Crier" (o divulgador de decretos). Assim, Sandy Danny ganhou o quinto símbolo, menor que os outros 4. Sandy faleceu em 21 de abril de 1978.
