O Poliphonic Spree se auto-intitula como um "Coral de rock sinfônico" do Texas e é uma banda numerosa que geralmente se apresenta com um côro de dez vozes, percussão, bateria, baixo, guitarra, flauta, trumpete, trombone, violino/viola, harpa, trompa, pedal steel guitar, um theremin e um membro só para cuidar dos efeitos eletrônicos.
O grupo foi criado por Tim DeLaughter, Mark Pirro e Bryan Wakeland que formavam a banda Tripping Daisy antes da morte do guitarrista Wes Breggren em 1999.
Em 2000 o Poliphonic Spree foi convidado para abrir os shows do Grandaddy. Em vez de simplesmente tocarem o repertório do Tripping Daisy, eles compuseram material novo, tendo em mente uma orquestra com coral, algo do gênero da Electric Light Orchestra. A reação pública foi imediata e desde então, o sucesso só aumentou e se consolidou primeiro na Inglaterra. Através de um convite de David Bowie, se apresentou como grupo de apoio na peça "A Divina Comédia" realizada no Royal Festival Hall em Londres durante o Meltdown Festival de 2002. Em 2003, a turma abriu os show da Reality Tour de Bowie. O ano de 2004 foi simplesmente estrondoso para a banda, que lançou seu segundo disco "Together We're Heavy" pela Hollywood Records e participou da série "Scrubs" no episódio do dia 20 de abril chamado "My Choosiest Chose of All" (algo como "Minha melhor escolha") e em outros programas, além de participarem da trilha do filme "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" com a música Day and Light.
Aqui no Brasil, a música Light and Day chegou a milhões de expectadores através do anúncio da Claro, que publiquei no Meu Blues Pra Você.
